OAK Leaderboard, Extended Bubble Guarantee

Posted by: GrimFandango » 23 Feb 2010, 22:04

OAK Leaderboard has finally returned! For those unfamiliar with the promotion, it awarded prizes to the best players of our internal tournaments every 3 months. The basic concept will remain similar, but we've made some improvements to make it more exciting, and importantly, more valuable too...

Question: When does it start?
It's already started! All scheduled tournaments in February are counting, except the monthly €1k Guarantee and the freeroll satellite postponed from last month.

Question: How are players ranked?
t's a very easy system. Your score will simply be the amount of money you've won (in the case of satellite tournaments, the value of the tournament entries will be used. For instance, winning a €10k Guarantee ticket in a freeroll satellite would add €75 to your score.)

Question: Which tournaments will be included?
All internal OAK tournaments will count with the exception of the monthly Guarantee tournaments. Starting from March, a number of regularly scheduled network tournaments will be added as well. The added tournaments will match the number of internal OAK tournaments and be closely scheduled for convenience. The maximum buyin for any included network tournament will be set to €25. Example: OAK Freeroll Satellite (21:00) + €8k Guarantee (20:20) on Wednesday, March 3rd.

Question: What can I win?
There will be prizes every month, every 3 months, as well as a yearly Grand Finale:

Every month
1: €100
2: €50
3: €25
4: €10

Every 3 months
1: €450
2: €200
3: €100
4: €50
5: €25
6: €15
7: €10

Every year:
The top 9 ranked players by December, 1st get to participate in a special end-of-the-year €2000 freeroll. If the player qualifies through other means, he will be credited with extra chips in the tournament instead. Finally, the top 9 players will receive a small headstart for next year's leaderboard based on their position and receive special OAK status with increased forum privileges.

Question: How do I keep track of the schedule and my scores?
There will be a dedicated OAK Leaderboard page where you can find schedules and payout dates, as well as easily flip between 1-month, 3-month, and yearly scores. The page will be published before March 1st along with the scheduled network tournaments that will accompany our internal OAK tournaments.

Note about the early schedule: February and March will count as one month (payout April, 10th.) The first 3-month period will be February-May (payout June, 10th.) Following periods will be 1 month / 3 months and payouts always on the 10th the following month.

Question: You announced earlier that highly ranked players in last year's leaderboard would get an advantage. How will that work?
Your score on the leaderboard will be multiplied with two and converted to €. For instance, if you had 50 points, you will get €100 added to your score.

EXTRA OFFERS | VIP Challenge, €2k Freeroll

We'd like to offer our sincere apologies for being later than promised in announcing the details of the leaderboard and the extended bubble guarantee; it's been an extremely busy month for your poor site administrator!

So... we decided to come up with a few extra bonus offers as a compensation:

€2k Guarantee freeroll: This tournament will replace next month's €1k Guarantee freeroll, offering you twice the value while keeping the 500 VIP point requirement. There will be a few additional ways to qualify as well, such as...

VIP Challenge (Feb. 23rd - 28th):
All players making 200 VIP points or more in this period will be qualified and automatically registered for the €2k Guarantee tournament. The top 5 ranked players will get to start the tournament with more chips than the rest of the field: 1st (4500), 2nd (4000), 3rd (3750), 4th (3500), 5th (3250). In addition, the top 10 ranked players will be credited €50 to their OAK Leaderboard score.

Rankings will be posted on February 24th, 26th and 27th. The winners will be announced on March, 1st.

1 VIP Qualifiers: For the lowrollers there will be 3 seats available to the €2k Guarantee tournament through a series of qualifying satellites. More details will be published later on, or you can just look for the tournaments to show up under "Special" in the tournament lobby of the client.

Responsible Gambling, Plea For Help

Posted by: GrimFandango » 23 Feb 2010, 21:56

For those of you that missed our last newsletter, I'm quoting the relevant section here:

Poker is fundamentally a game of skill, but there is obviously an element of gambling to the game as well, with its set of assorted risks. This is doubly true if the player fails to stick to proper bankroll management since it magnifies the short term luck factor, and the increased risk of ruin will often influence decision making on the tables in a negative direction, thus compounding the problem further. Worse, the player might get tempted to chase his losses and play beyond his means. We're now talking about compulsive gambling, a very serious problem.

Unfortunately, we have a player that fell into this trap hard, digging herself into a hole she's having trouble climbing out from. She has chosen to out herself and her problem; you'll know her as @mamma_mu from the tables. She's gambled away all her available funds and is currently at risk of getting kicked out of her apartment since she's not able to pay her rent.

For a number of reasons, I would normally never do this, but since I happen to know this player personally, I offered her some help of my own and promised to ask OAK for help as well if she outed herself and her problem to have full openness about it.

She's about €600 short of making her rent. If you're interested in helping out, then please don't make any direct transfers. I think it's important to make this as transparent as possible, so a forum thread on OAK will be created where @mamma_mu will participate herself and we'll figure out the best way to proceed from there. Feel free to respond directly to this mail for questions or suggestions.

Some additional information:

- I'm aware that this is a bit of an imposition. Don't feel you have any obligation to help. Help if you want to help.

- She requested that we set her monthly deposit limit to €50, which we naturally fixed for her. If you feel you're having similar problems, please don't hesitate to contact us to get a fixed limit yourself.

- For some additional reading about responsible gambling, please visit the Responsible Gambling section of LGA (Mets Poker is licensed by LGA) and read the articles and documents contained in it.

- If you feel you're having a problem, feel free to contact me if you want to talk about it, but don't expect any fund raising. This is a one time happening due to the special circumstances and the fact that I know the player well enough to know that it's not an attempt at exploitation.

Link to online version of the newsletter

Use the comment section if you want to reach out a hand or just want to discussed problematic aspects of gambling in general. @mamma_mu will be available to answer questions in the thread.

Grim in EMOP: Busto!

Posted by: GrimFandango » 29 Jan 2010, 23:49

A quick update on my progress in EMOP (or lack thereof to be exact)...

... I'm on the button with T8s, 5k chips, SB/BB = 300/600 + 50 in antes. Everybody folds, and (naturally!) I go allin. Like what is often the case when playing online, BB wakes up with a decent hand (KJ) and similarly typical, the smallstack gets no help, and end of story.

But the story began a few rounds earlier though. I had T9s on BB and everybody folds except the SB who limp-calls. I decide to raise and he calls. After firing out a few barrels, he very hesitantly decided to make a good call with 88 on a AKK77 board, which left me shortstacked.

I might have to revise my fondness for suited connectors after this!

On the bright side, the weather here is beautiful and there's no shortage of scantily clad pretty girls either, so no need to feel too sorry!

As for other OAK/Mets players, @mamma_mu (the winner of our "EMOP Freeroll Ranking" promotion) is still in, but a bit short, while kanin1 suffered a cruel badbeat with AA vs. 56s and exited early too.

Weekend VIP Challenge & Upcoming Promotions

Posted by: GrimFandango » 16 Jan 2010, 02:15

Unlock up to 3 different levels by making VIP points during the upcoming weekend (Friday 15th 00:00 - Monday 20:30), and get access to increasingly high value freerolls on Monday:

Level 1: Requirement: 1 VIP. Reward: Access to Level 1 freeroll, Jan 18th - 20:00 CET
Level 2: Requirement: 10 VIP. Reward: Access to Level 2 freeroll, Jan 18th - 20:30 CET
Level 3: Requirement: 100 VIP. Rewards: Access to Level 3 freeroll, Jan 18th - 21:00 CET + free entry to a future OAK Freeroll Satellite of player's choice + share of 50% of the winnings of two staked players (BIG-OAK, WhiteOAK) in the upcoming Sunday €50k Guarantee tournament if reaching level 3 before tournament start (21:00 CET). Update: GrimOAK (yours truly) has replaced BIG-OAK in the tournament, meaning it's 50% of GrimOAK/WhiteOAK winnings.

PS! There was an error earlier today with some of the VIP requirements being mixed up, but that has been resolved now. Some players may need to re-register if having signed up for any of the tournaments early though.

All freerolls are satellite tournaments sharing identical prize pools (which obviously is not to say that the value is identical since the field of players in the various freerolls will decrease sharply at each level step):

1st place: Entry to Special €1500 Freeroll, Tuesday (€45), January 19th - 21:00 PM CET.
2nd place: Entry to Special Freeroll Satellite (€15), Wednesday, January 20th - 21:00 PM CET.

Rewards are additive; earning Level 3 status gives you access to all 3 freerolls, not just the level 3 freeroll. If you win entry to a tournament you're already qualified for, you will receive money directly to your account instead as compensation.

(For more information and details about the tournaments, follow the above links.)

February Promos, Brief Overview

There's a lot of exciting new stuff and expansions coming up for OAK / Mets Poker players in February. We're quite confident in saying that the combined value has never been as high in any single month before:

Reload bonus. 100% back on deposits from €10 to €1000. Best available terms available on the network: 30 days, €10/100 VIP.

OAK Leaderboard. The long awaited return of OAK Leaderboard! The previous incarnation awarded points based on results in OAK tournaments, and will be the main feature of the new one as well, however, network tournaments might be added and there's going to be a few other cool features as well...

EMOP Ranking Freerolls. Our popular series of freeroll ranking tournaments will return in February with 1-3 highly valued packages to European Masters of Poker tournaments on the line (the total number of packages offered will be determined by number of cooperating skins and overall cost of packages.)

OAK Staking. The staking of BIG-OAK in the largest and most expensive network tours will continue and form the foundation for a couple of new offers, potentially bringing a lot of extra value to our members.

Extended Bubble Guarantee. It's been a while since we last made any changes to our popular Bubble Guarantee offer. Starting in February, the list of covered tournaments will be revised and extended.

Network Promotions. There's more value than ever in February network promotions (the total value is roughly €300,000.) For instance, starting in February you might actually be able to make a lot of money by getting AA twice or three times in a row as opposed to getting sucked out by K7 and 46 after getting stacks in preflop (the more typical outcome according to some..) More details about that offer and other upcoming network promotions will be posted shortly.

Looking forward to The Champions League ;)

Posted by: Whiteflag-DK » 06 Mar 2010, 18:08

Hey all

As indicated in the heading, I am really looking forward to the Champions League to really get going again. The winter break is such a pain, but it's all forgotten now ;). There are really more than a few exciting 2nd legs as far as I see it. The Barca-match vs Stuttgart should be a lock really. Even though they are challenged by injuries at the moment, Barca have to prove their class at home after admittedly having a lucky draw away. Of other good match-ups, I predict an intense affair for United when AC Milan drops by - even though it looks like a walkover for The Reds, Milan should not be underestimated and probably want to revenge their homefield defeat! Also Chelsea will be challenge against Inter. I sincerely hope that Inter can withstand the pressure they will get at Stanford Bridge.... Goooo Inter!

Finally I really cross my fingers for Lyon - and quite frankly I like their chances. Having a 1-0 advantage going into the match against Real Madrid might not look that secure and probably isn't, but the thing is Real didn't manage to score in France which can prove vital! I have no doubt Real will produce a ton of chances and also score on some of them, but they also have a tendency to slip in at least one goal in the other end - if that happens (and I desperately hope so) Real have to make 3 goals themselves which might not be as easy as it sounds ;)

Pokerwise life is still good - even though I cannot get these OAK-sat tickets these days (and more importantly the €-points for the leaderboard), I win more than I loose. Thursday I finished a deep run in the 8K in 3rd place giving me an 800€+ prize.... And just another ago, I made a 3-way deal in the 40€ shorthanded for 300€+...... All I need now is making my horse avoid the badbeats it has experienced lately - he's playing really solid poker, but cannot make any serious attacks on the size of the BR. Hopefully it all turns in the coming days....

Until then - gl at the tables everyone!

Some thinking and a WW 2030 win

Posted by: BIG-OAK » 26 Feb 2010, 17:17

Hey all

My sunday was just great, from my poker plays point of view, not moneywise - no big results.

Got itm in most of the tours, but no top results because of showdown UL.

In the sunday tour I made my worst play. Actually had an ok stack but choose to rely on TT on a 9 high board all the way to the river, eventhough a player had reraised me preflop. I found myself in a situaion where I believed he either had AA or AK - this was bad play imo :(

Alot of other tours since then has really sucked and I have lost just outside the money in alot of tours - it gives no sence at all. But then it al changed a bit, when I won a 20.30 WW, 5 way deal I think. I got more than a nd spot would have given with no deal, and with the end blinds in a ww, I was really satisfied with a 5 way deal and more € than a normal 2nd place had given :) Think I won 460+€

For a time being I will not touch cash games. I have had 3 evenings completely ruined by UL, losing pots of total 1500€ that I was huge favourite in. I have also taken 50% out of my BR because of this choice and will try to build from scratch again. I was more or less forced to do this because of private financial stuff :-P

Well I have a 10k seat tonight and once again I banged you all around in an OAK tour, damn I don't have time for the new OAK Leadboard, really nice value there!

GL all and may our BRs build again ;)

Big Tour Night - OAK Staking Off

Posted by: BIG-OAK » 21 Feb 2010, 19:08

Hey all

Tonight will be a master's night for us I think.

I'll try to play every "little" tour that I find valuable.

I'll try to update here with interesting hands etc.

Unfortunately I have been asked to play other tours than the big expensive 21.00 CET Sunday tours, like 8k gtd and stuff on the OAK staking. I have kindly said "no thank you" to Grim and co. so the OAK staking of me is off from now on :( I have more value in playing that tours with my own BR, I hope you all understand - I think you do ;)

Therefore the 50k tonight is played from my own BR.

GL all today and GL OAK if you choose to find other players to stake at tours like 8k etc.

..... and on a roll ;)

Posted by: Whiteflag-DK » 15 Feb 2010, 17:30

Hey all...

One or a few of my hundreds of loyal readers might have noticed that I actually missed the 4K yesterday even though I had more or less promised a three-peat. Guests (the poker players worst enemy) suddenly made it all impossible.

Later in the evening though I made fairly good runs in the 8K and 50K - building reasonable stacks in both before getting knocked out - so all in all, yesterday was a non-profit Sunday :(

However, It didn't take me long to regroup (boy, do I sound as Phil Hellmuth right now). In today's 10€ rebuy at 13:30 I went all the way and won it in a 2-way deal for 600€. It really feels good with all these nice results and most important, confidence is established - in my oppinion one of the most important things in poker, especially in the last part of the tournaments.

Well - hopefully the good run continues throughout the holidays ;)

Still solid - especially in the 4K :)

Posted by: Whiteflag-DK » 14 Feb 2010, 13:26

Hey guys & girls

Yes, I know that some of you will be surprised to see a new blog already - but playing good and solid equals good results and when the good results are there, it is so much easier to report... A few years back, there was an English player blogging away - I believe his name was Ed Hollis and you might have followed him too. He was a very honest player who went on an unnatural heater and won a lot of money - and naturally blogging away alongside... However, the heating went sour and he started loosing (and loosing and loosing). The impressive thing though was that he kept blogging, telling about his downfall which was literally from millions of pounds to selling the house, borrowing money from friends and family to being absolutely broke! I admire this guy in some way, because it takes disciplin and guts to write about your own disasters!

Anyway, things have been good lately, so fortunately I do not have to go the Ed Hollis-way just yet. I have just started my winter holiday (one of the good things about being a school teacher) and I started out Friday by entering the 4K Guaranteed 10€ rebuy at 18:20. It normally has about 200 players with plenty of Turks and Italians to be valuable. I made it to the Final Table and when we got down to 3 players we looked at the deal, which would've given me about 600€ - but the deal was not accepted by the CL. Soon after, I looked down at 77 in the BB. SB just called and I went allin, which he insta-called with 44. Bad thing was that he catched a runner-runner flush to bust me... Immediately hereafter, the two remaining players made a deal giving them both 800+ € while I was sitting with my 3rd place price of 399€. A bit of a downer after being so close.

Needless to say, I had to try for revenge in yesterdays 4K. And it went well indeed since I won it in a 4-way deal giving me 700€. I think I played well in both tours, even if I was a little lucky in the last one just at the beginning of the FT. I was in 8th place and tried with an allin with AJ only to meet KK in the BB. However, the board showed five hearts and since none of us had any of these, we had to settle for a split pot :).

All in all a good couple of days to kick off the holiday and hopefully I can follow up with another nice results in the following week - one thing is certain though... You can find me in today's 4K at 18:20 - hehe...

GL at the tables to all of you out there....
